The Winter Holiday of Instant Gratification?

Some might say Christmas, but I disagree.

There is no guarantee of gratification when the gift is opened. Sure, opening it may be gratifying in and of itself, but that is only because of the anticipation, and should therefore not be considered instant gratification.

If we look to the religious meaning of the birth of Christ, that as well should not qualify as instant gratification. The birth of the Christ child is significant as it leads to his followers’ ability to gain eternal salvation at the end of their life. Gratification after an undetermined amount of time has passed is hardly instantaneous.

Lo when we look to the Solstice we see that the Gratification arrives instantly at the exact moment of the Solstice. At that instant, the days become longer and Winter, though officially starting, is on its way out. Now that is a holiday of instant gratification that I can get behind.

Happy Solstice! 2 left to go?…

With Winter Solstice 2010 currently underway, let me give a resounding, celebratory happy *insert winter solstice observance here* to all celebrants around the globe! Enjoy it while you can, because according to some, there are only two left!

Personally, I love the idea of and the mythos behind the Mayan Long Count Prophecy; be it the purported “actual” Mayan mythology, the Terence McKenna modified/unified theory, Nostradamus’ actual, or accredited, prophetic quatrains, or the theory as seen in the Emmerich film 2012 (I love me some exploding landmarks!), though I tend to not fully “drink the Kool-Aid” on this one. Yes, I watched the 2000 New Years celebrations, starting from Sydney and working my way around the globe, while secretly yearning for planes to start dropping, ATMs to start spitting out cash, and Soviet-era missiles to launch willy-nilly, but I didn’t really expect anything to happen. I have the same approach to December 21, 2012 - or 22nd, or 23rd.. I’m not picky.. I’ll take whichever Armageddon I can get!

My desire for the big ending doesn’t solely come from chronic misanthropy as much as it does from lackadaisical retirement investing.. some like RRSPs, others prefer Bug-Out Bags, water purifiers, knives & crossbows. I tend to follow my financial adviser’s advice and diversify! (ie: a B-o-B full of Lockheed-Martin stock) Seriously though, why scrimp, save and invest when you can learn how to weave baskets, make a solar panel from chewing gum wrappers and spruce tree resin, and take down a 12 point buck with a home made sling shot? All I need is one, just one form of global meltdown! Is that too much to ask? Anyhow, I digress…

Of all the 2012 opinions and viewpoints out there, the one that really appeals to me the most, and that I actually do long for - though minus the weird alien/demonic Illuminati antagonist assholes, is that of Grant Morrison’s the Invisibles. Quite frankly the best graphic novel series I have ever read, and possibly the best ever written, it’s underlying theme/meme/potential outcome of a global change of consciousness in 2012 is the most appealing. Because really, if the whole world got their collective shit together, things would change - for the better. It might be shitty for a little bit, but ultimately it would get better. And that’s what we all need right now, is for the world to get better.

Ultimately though, we should not rely on a supernatural, prophetic interpretation of ancient civilization that didn’t leave us a whole lot of info to be our saving grace. We need to work towards our global consciousness shake up ourselves. Sure, it would be nice to do so in two years time, but chances are it might take longer. That doesn’t mean we should stop working towards it, but perhaps we need to take a swig of the salt water with this one. I feel the only change we can expect in 2012 is a flood of marketing for Apocalypse insurance, and 2012 everything.. you do remember Y2K right?

Also - whenever you are confronted with 2012 and the Mayan Long Count Prophecy remember this - Maya, in Sanskrit (one of the oldest languages in existence) means Illusion.

All hail our cephalopod overlords! This little guy/gal, let’s just call it.. oh, I dunno… Cthulhu, is the first example we humans have seen of invertebrates using tools. Not only is it indicative of the nature of animal intelligence, evolution, and the influence of man on his environment (notice the perfectly split coconut), but it is also indicative of the hilarity of the animal kingdom! Did you not see him running with a coconut?! Classic!
